At Fashion East it was presented the real London freak style. Yes, freak. I don't find these collections elegant, at all, but it is stylish when it comes to party night in the London mood. Photos by Michael Stephens.

  1. LFW has been pretty disappointing for a number of years. In the course of the 1990s, there were a number of young designers who made a name, partly because of their provocative style, mostly because of their talent. Alexander McQueen or John Galliano were amongst them. It seems that nowadays, many young London designers think that they will make an impact by being provocative. Alas, they don't have the talent! Their fashion is indeed just freaky.

  2. I don't think it's necessarily a case of young designers having 'no talent'- I think it's just hard for designers to try and create something that hasn't been done without being perceived as 'freaky'. I'm a fashion design student and I managed to get into the Fashion East show. I must admit when I saw the first third of the collection by Nasir Mazhar I didn't really appreciate the collection. I was then reminded that he is actually by trade more of a Milliner. Some fashion designers are naturally more showman. The other 2 collections were highly experimental and the close up detailing, construction and fabrics were actually very well considered. 3 very different designers all with potential. Fashion East has actually helped to launch the careers of new designers such as Louise Gray which I also had the privilege of seeing in her presentation at LFW.
Unfortunately designers like Alexander McQueen and John Galliano don't come around that often. I think we need to give new designers a bit more of a change to prove themselves and stop comparing them to great designers who probably went through the same criticism.
A really interesting comment though Davidikus.
